John Douglas responds to Malcolm Gladwell
Written by Editor

On Monday, November 12, 2007, long time New Yorker staff writer, Malcom Gladwell, penned an editorial on criminal profiling, likening profilers to psychics. To make his point, Gladwell attempts to take the reader through a series of annectdotal and "what if" tales while heavily relying upon the recently published book, "Inside the Mind of the BTK," by FBI criminal profiler and co-author, John Douglas. Not unsurprisingly, Mr. Douglas, responded to Gladwell's opinion piece. Unfortunately, the New Yorker was only willing to reprint a portion of his response. It is therefore with great pleasure that I have been granted permission to republish Mr. Douglas' letter to the editor, in full.

The first wave was plaintiff lawsuits against alleged perpetrators. Beginning in 1989, the State of Washington enacted the "delayed discovery rule"[1] thereby opening up the possibility for adult victims of childhood sexual abuse to sue their perpetrators, after having recovered memories of the abuse some 20 to 30 years later.

When the first murmurings of recovering memories of childhood sexual abuse appeared society was gripped in an almost religious fervor. Hardly a day went by when at least one talk show had a guest who claimed to have been sexually abused or yet another celebrity went public about their sexual abuse as a child.

The Black Death killed approximately 30% of the European population in the mid-1300s. It was during this period, along with the peasants' revolt and the 100 years war, that the spectre of death proliferated European culture--due not only to its expansive reach and gruesome results, but also that it followed closely upon the heels of the Crusades, as Europe emerged from the cloud of unknowing, and into the colorful tapestry of the Renaissance.

Most large cities, and even some of the smaller ones, have diverse pockets of culture. Some of these can be rich with history. Inviting even. Others are those places you don;t really want to be caught in after dark. You know the ones. The red light districts, combat zones, or whatever moniker is assigned to an area that is rife with sex, drugs, and violence.

The murder of a human, one by another, has been with us since the dawn of time. Whether the slaying of Abel by Cain (if the bible is to be believed), ritual sacrifice, war, abortion, or other forms of murder, our history is rife with stories of life extinguished before its time.
