Apparent indifference
To what other's say and do,
Marked by avoidant eyes
And abhorrence of what's new.

Walking the talk

"I thought about JonBenet a lot while I was with [redacted] especially. No, she did not look like JonBenet but she was five and little. She was so full of life like JonBenet was. She was brave like JonBenet. She immediately bonded with me and quickly told me she liked me, just like JonBenet. Her comments about me being a monster made me feel strange. Telling me she was scared of me was also really bizarre. Of course, she was acting silly the whole time she said it but there also seemed to be some kind of seriousness about it. It was as if she was saying she could detect something dark about me. She also ran her fingers across her neck and suggested that this is what I might do to her if I catch her. It was almost chilling as it reminded me of JonBenet. I had made my first little friend -- [redacted] age five and her little friends [redacted], [redacted], and [redacted]."

The sacred executioner

In his book, "The Sacred Executioner," Hyam Maccoby notes:

"A figure in mythology that has received little attention is that of the Sacred Executioner. [...] By taking the blame for the slaying, he is performing a great service to society, for not only does he perform the deed, but he takes upon himself the blame for it, and thus absolves society as a whole completely from the guilt of a slaying for which they, in fact, are responsible and by which, in theory at least, they benefit." (Maccoby, 1982, p 7-8)

A stone`s throw

I had planned to title this article "Collateral damage" to expand upon a reply that I wrote to Anon and Alicia in the comments section of my Scripting Aphrodites article. Upon further investigation however it became clear that the phrase does not really capture my intended point. Perhaps then, it is time to return to basics--chaos theory or the butterfly effect, to be precise.

Profiling the Unsub

[Editor's note: Some time ago, Russell L. Smith, creator of the BRACE Character Profile, contacted John Douglas, renown FBI profiler, asking him to score an unsub of his choice. Mr Smith's goal? To gauge the validity of his tool against a known serial killer. This is the second of two installments of the "BRACE Character Profile Validity Test."]

Kindreds and tongues and nations
Offer fruitful ways to be against,
Because this self-possessed loner
Nitpicks any difference sensed.
