First of all, let me say thank you to everyone on this blog. One, for making it possible, and two, for letting me be here. Trench of MyCrimeSpace posted an interesting tidbit regarding Massachusetts AG Tom Reillys challenge to myspace. I say interesting simply because I do not have a great deal of faith in myspace's alleged commitment to tighten up security in an attempt to make their venue safer for teens.

Our brains are designed to recognize patterns. We continuously assess our surroundings, predict outcome, and adjust our behavior in accordance with resulting predictions. On Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 8:44 PM Eastern, the Orange County Sheriff's Office received a call regarding a missing child. Less than an hour later, Cindy Anthony called back in near hysterics, claiming that her daughter finally admitted to her that Caylee had been abducted and that "There's something wrong. I found my daughter's car today and it smells like there's been a dead body in the damn car."

In the early Monday morning hours of April 16, 2007, 23-year-old Seung-Hui Cho went on what purports to be the second bloodiest school massacre in the history of this nation, and topping the most well-known school shooter, 25-year-old Charles Whitman. The first involved 55-year-old Andrew Philip Kehoe's May 18, 1927, bombing of Michigan's Bath elementary school that left 45 dead and 58 wounded. Kehoe may have also had something to do with the death of his stepmother, who became engulfed in flames when the family stove exploded.

Dangerous Ideas

"Every era has its dangerous ideas. For millennia, the monotheistic religions have persecuted countless heresies, together with nuisances from science such as geocentrism, biblical archeology, and the theory of evolution. We can be thankful that the punishments have changed from torture and mutilation to the canceling of grants and the writing of vituperative reviews. But intellectual intimidation, whether by sword or by pen, inevitably shapes the ideas that are taken seriously in a given era, and the rear-view mirror of history presents us with a warning." -- Steven Pinker, 2007

Spike TV's new reality television started off with a blast... or was that two blasts? Former Texas detective, Tommy Le Noir, hosts the new Spike TV reality show which includes everything from a re-created crime scene, visits to the coroners lab, to forensic re-enactments. The cases are culled from previously solved murder cases. And the show culminates in a presentation of the who, how, and why, by each team. With one caveat. The participants must solve the murder(s) within 48 hours.
