Walking the talk

Ever since Boulder Colorado District Attorney Mary Lacy dropped the case against John Mark Karr, the MSM has been busy tallying up the cost of the investigation. Sadly, Colorado Governor Bill Owens along with a few web sleuthers and crime bloggers have jumped upon that unholy bandwagon. Their message is quite clear: Lacy wasted tens of thousands of tax payer dollars to protect a child. What on earth was she thinking anyway? It is a pretty sad state of affairs when you think about it. After all of the lip service people have paid to protecting children--remember the One Strike Law?--they are now castigating Lacy for doing that very thing. Protecting a child. Did they not read the e-mails or listen to the tapes? Or do they only care about protecting children as long as they are white?

Of course the case against Karr was slim. Most who watched the very first broadcast of Karrs so-called confession immediately recognized just how slim it was. Yet, it was still possible that he was JonBenéts killer. For that reason alone, Lacy was required to rule Karr in or out. She was also faced with a conundrum. For it was clear from Karrs e-mails and phone calls that he was preying upon his next victim. So Lacy made a choice--even at the risk of losing her job. She chose to do the right thing rather than the political thing. And not only that, she has fully shouldered the responsibility for her choice rather than playing the blame game that so many politicians readily do when faced with least bit of public criticism.

When considering the big picture--you know, the one that goes beyond focusing upon a murdered child whose sexualized image has been replayed by the media machine, ad nauseum?--Lacy deserves our respect, not our disdain. And I challenge you who write blogs to join me in applauding District Attorney Mary Lacys efforts. Or... you can trot on over to the blame game bandwagon and do that song and dance while claiming that you care about the safety of children. As with Lacy, the choice is yours and the question is simple: What price do you place upon the safety of a child?
