Blogsphere Deathtrip

Blogging began as an online journal of sorts whose initial goal created a means for jotting down thoughts or memorable moments and sharing them with family and friends. There were always the lone blogger, of course. As time marched forward (does it ever really move?) online journaling morphed, resulting in a new form of community. A new medium for sharing ideas. Indeed, the internet has provided us with a means for voicing our opinions and connecting, for raising public awareness. For the first time, people who did not speak out before, have a means to do so. Shut-ins are no longer shut out of society. People from different parts of the world can gather together and share ideas. And old and oft forgotten friendships are renewed. The brave new world. I guess. As with real life communities, the blogsphere comes with its own shadow side. Or as the blogger of Sigmund, Carl, and Alfred amusingingly notes, "the world of bloggers, many of whom exhibit more than mild symptoms of various personality disorders."

To be sure, this new community seems to have taken on a life of its own. And with it, comes a rich hunting ground for predators. In times past, the victims were nothing more than strangers, a blurb in the local news. This is especially so in places where homicide rates hover between 7 and 10 monthly. And those are the good months. In such places, and to all but the immediate family and circle of friends, muder is sadly, though not surprisingly, just another "ho-hum." The blogsphere however has changed that. Perhaps for the better. For it brings a face to the victims. When considering, for example, the slaying of Sharon and Simon Ng, had the young man not blogged just prior to his murder, his tragic tale would have been relegated to the annals of crime statistics. Yet his blog not only gave law enforcement solid clues, but it also gave us another view. One that could not have possibly been captured by the media. For it conveyed the essense of his personhood.

In light of the various manner of deaths that are played out in real life, while at the same time, hinted at or even openly discussed on peoples blogs
